Stepping into middle school could be difficult for some students. They would transition from elementary school to middle school. It’s like a new chapter of their lives, starting as a kid, now a tween or teen.
I interviewed some of humanities teacher Fiammetta Dizon’s sixth graders. They shared their opinions about how they like and dislike Fernando Rivera Intermediate School (FRS), how their school life is going so far, and what’s the difference between their elementary and middle school. So three students, Olivia Wong, Alex Tun, and Yulin Zhu all shared their opinions.
First, we have Olivia Wong, for what they like about school and they said, “I like how everyone is easy to talk to.” Then they answered what they disliked about the school, and they said “Nothing.”
Next, they shared how their school life in FRS is, and they replied, “It’s good so far.”
Finally, they shared the difference between their elementary and middle school, academically and socially. “Middle school is a lot bigger and there are a lot more people. Academically, middle school has helped me learn better because different teachers know the subject better.”
Next, we have Alex Tun. They said “the field” was what they liked about the school. And “homework” was the thing they disliked.
Then, they said “It has been pretty fun, I have been enjoying it so far.”
And lastly, they shared what’s the difference between their elementary and middle school. They shared, “The thing that is different is that in elementary, I just had to stay in one big classroom but now in middle school, I have more responsibility and go to different classes.”
Finally, we have Yulin Zhu. What they said about liking the school was, “The school is really good, I like how the rules aren’t that strict and are reasonable.” Then they shared what they disliked, which was, “I don’t have anything to say about how I don’t like Fernando.”
Next, they described how their school life is going, “So far in the school year, it has been pretty good. I enjoy my elective and my humanities teacher is super funny. “
Lastly, they explained what the difference was between their elementary and middle school. They said, “Elementary was of course easier, and my assignments before didn’t have a big impact on my grade. Socially, my friends were still in contact and had more time to go home and play games with each other, but now my friends distanced themselves from each other and made new friends to hang out with. All of this is just what middle school is like and probably every kid has experienced this with their friends/friend groups.”
Each of the sixth graders had different opinions on what they liked about FRS and disliked. They each had their own experiences with life at FRS and how that compared to their elementary school life.
