A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck at 10:44 a.m. near Petrolia, CA in Humboldt County.
A 5.9 magnitude earthquake soon followed in Cobb, near Santa Rosa.
A tsunami warning soon followed for Northern California’s coast up to the Bay Area and was later canceled at noon.
Numerous aftershocks were reported following the earthquake and are expected to last for a week.
Emergency notifications were delivered to all smartphones in the affected areas. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) originally reported the earthquake as a 6.6 magnitude but later upgraded it to a 7.0.
Minor damage to buildings has been reported.
