Fernando Rivera Intermediate School (FRS) student government members visited a senior home late November. This initiative aimed to foster intergenerational relationships and promote understanding between generations.
During the visit, students and seniors bonded over various activities, including card giving and experience sharing. These interactions provided a platform for the exchange of life experiences. Joyce Do, a student representative, shared her thoughts on the benefits of this initiative, saying, “One of the benefits were that we were able to see all the health issues they had and [see] how one small thing can mean a lot to another person.”
The visit was a lesson for the students and an emotional experience for the seniors. When going to visit the seniors, Do said “We were able to talk to some of the seniors and some of them started to cry because some don’t have family to visit them.” This observation shows the importance of addressing the needs of senior citizens who are being neglected.
The event was planned by the student government and the senior home. In students’ planning and other activities, they came up with means that would promote contact with the seniors so that they could understand their life terms. As a result, students were educated as to the difficulties and complications of the elderly in terms of emotions and health, while the elderly were made to feel valued and there.
