There have been many changes in the school here at Fernando Rivera. This school year, there are enrichment classes, one of which is a cooking class taught by Janet Rodriguez. In this class, students will learn about different types of cuisine and cooking skills and techniques. Rodriguez chose this enrichment because most people love food and she believes it would be a great experience for students.
“It’s a lot of work, and we usually do a lot of planning and collaboration. We plan out what to cook as a class. Usually, it’s based on a heritage month, so we try to celebrate different heritages,” Rodriguez said.
Although there is a lot of planning and hard work that goes into this enrichment, it is very rewarding and fun.
Camillo Sanchez Willson, an eighth grader, said, “Yes, it could be a little chaotic sometimes, but I could see why a lot of students were trying to choose it. One of the hardest parts of this is honestly trying to get everyone to settle down because it’s really loud in there.”
Seventh grader Makuel Aguliar Yabut shared why he chose this enrichment and how well his class is going so far, “I choose this enrichment because I’m hungry and I like making food. So far this class is going well but enrichment is only thirty minutes so we have to be really fast.”
Some dishes this class has been able to learn so far are lumpia, mac and cheese, Filipino spaghetti, salsa, fruit cups, and different types of treats. Many students seem to enjoy and learn a lot in this cooking class.
